Wilson Design Associates completely transformed this 1-acre High School Courtyard into an outdoor center for creativity and learning. Our goal was to both create a space to encourage education, permit safe gatherings, and allow thought. Our secondary goal was to maximize mobility throughout the school. The courtyard is now an efficient thoroughfare that cuts through the square school.

After polling every student, asking for their vision on a sheet of paper with the courtyard outlined, we ended up with a performing arts stage, water features, outdoor classroom space, a greenhouse, and art installations (that grow with each graduating class). We utilized the student population to get involved in the design process, they even constructed the benches that sit around the central maple leaf area. Those students that were very involved told us they were graduating and studying design and engineering. It was a truly collaborative and education-driven project that resulted in an absolutely stunning, and very functional outdoor space.
